Yesterday, Jesse and I visited the Philadelphia Zoo for the first time. My last trip to a zoo, years ago, left me with memories of cramped cages and sad animals, so I've been kind of wary of them ever since. This one was much nicer and the animals actually had room to roam around and interact with each other, so it turned into a really fun day. We were even able to take the Philly tourist trolley (called the Phlash....I'm not kidding) there and back. Sometimes it's fun to pretend to be a tourist in your own town.

Then we had dinner at Moshulu, a restaurant built on a century-old ship docked at the Penns Landing waterfront. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was pretty snazzy. Jesse and I are so not swanky people, but it was fun to get dressed up for one night and pretend. After that, we baked these cupcakes and a miniature cake.

They're lemon with cream cheese icing. Even though our icing came out more like a glaze than your typical fluffy buttercream (I'm not sure if it was supposed to or not), they were still really delicious and super easy to make (recipe here)

  2. I love the Philly Zoo--it's always fun to encounter one of the peacocks as they putz around, squawking at you and unfurling their feathers.
