This is kind of uncomfortable since we haven't talked in so long, but I have good reasons. I've had some pretty major life changes since the last post.

We bought a house! Not just any house, but the house we hope to stay in for a long, long time. We bought this house knowing it needed a lot of fixing up, so we've been really busy with projects large and small to make it into our home.

To make things more complicated, I was pregnant with our second child when we bought the house and moved. That little boy has since been born (dramatically, during the worst blizzard Baltimore has seen in 20 years!) and is now almost 9 months old. Yep, it's been that long since I posted last. Welcome, Remy!

Just a couple of days before Remy was born, I was commissioned to illustrate another book for the Folio Society, who are my absolute favorite client. I might have turned it down due to the terrible timing, but the book was Jane Austen's Persuasion, a novel I'd already read and loved. The next few months, illustrating a book with a newborn and a toddler while also returning to teach were some of the most exhausting I've experienced, but worth it.

My second born is also a horrible sleeper and we've been subsisting on 3-4 hrs of broken sleep a night for the last 6 months.
So, this poor little blog has fallen by the wayside. I've still been updating instagram with personal photos and sketches and pinterest with inspiration images from time to time. Earlier this week, I received my published copies of Persuasion and today I'm finally able to share images from it, so I figured it's time to dust this little blog off again.

Over the next week, I'll be posting final illustrations, roughs, and process images from the book, as well as a bunch of other stuff! deannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00462967603165693754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8371444819729553472.post-52787501870182917932015-02-21T23:43:00.001-05:002015-02-21T23:47:25.097-05:00Boyhood

Jesse and I used to watch a ton of movies before we became parents. I think I've been to the movie theater a total of three times, maybe four, since Sebastian was born. Usually when I do get to watch a movie, it's months after it came out on dvd or amazon prime. The few movies I have watched lately have been really good, though (Birdman, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Snowpiercer, among others). I'd been hoping to make
illustrations for each as practice, but freelancing and teaching keeps
getting in the way. Hopefully I'll be able to finish a few others soon! deannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00462967603165693754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8371444819729553472.post-13349474291878778772015-01-09T08:00:00.000-05:002015-01-09T08:00:06.486-05:00Another Random Sketchbook Page

I just stumbled upon this sketchbook page from last year that I never posted. The funny thing is that a couple of months ago I got my hair cut extremely short - like pixie cut short and unfortunately I'm feeling the sentiments. Only this time, it's going take a lot longer....deannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00462967603165693754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8371444819729553472.post-33364729668161320032015-01-08T22:21:00.002-05:002015-01-08T22:22:59.232-05:00Another Random Sketchbook Page - Winter Accessories

The show will also feature some of Sendak's original drawings! We've been reading lots of Sendak books to Sebastian lately - Where the Wild Things Are and Bumble-Ardy
are favorites, so I'm excited to be a part of this. The exhibit will run
from Oct. 6 - January on the 2nd floor of the library. If you're close
by, you should check it out! deannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00462967603165693754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8371444819729553472.post-63725219035230056132014-09-05T21:37:00.000-04:002014-09-05T21:37:10.202-04:00A Dapper Gentleman

I drew a series of well-dressed traveling men for slate.com this week to go along with a project that they're working on with Holiday Inn Express. I've been working on some new drawings lately to put together in a promo piece for my fashion/lifestyle work. I just picked clothes from brands I'd buy from or would like to work for and tried to make fun drawings around them. It's been a lot like window shopping. I also want to add a few pieces by high-end couture designers as well. Here's the first of the series and I'll try to update with more soon!
The Penn Line runs on weekends now!
First, we met up with her husband in Arlington, VA to eat brunch and visit their community garden plot. And of course I brought my land camera.
The house we're renting has a tiny patch of backyard that was in
terrible shape when we moved in. I've been trying to transform it into a
pretty garden all Spring, so gardening and plant life have really consumed me lately. I was really taken with the neon stems of this swiss chard plant. Even though I don't like the taste of it, I plan to add some to our garden next year just for that shock of color!

Good food, leisurely conversation, interesting art, and colorful plants - a pretty much perfect day trip to me.

The wonderful caveat for this assignment was that the finals were supposed to look like my sketchbook work!

The three illustrations were to be based on specific sabbatical experiences by professors from within the article. I several sketches for each illustration before going to final.

Sketches for the first illustration about the various people and situations one professor encountered in waiting rooms to meet local Brazilian politicians:
This was a really fun assignment. I loved switching between so many diverse topics while working so loosely. I could draw the Faroe Islands for days and be content. The reference photos I looked at were all so beautiful - it's now been added to my future travel list!

This time, upgraded with flash and a better focusing mechanism. I couldn't have asked for anything better.

And of course, I had to start shooting right away. Here a few photos from the last few weeks. Like always, they're far from perfect, but that's how I like them.

We took Sebastian to Glen Echo Park in Maryland to ride his first carousel, then we traveled to Niagara Falls, NY to introduce him to his Great Grandmother and a Great Aunt and Uncle, and finally I took my first land camera photo with flash! Well, actually, Jesse took it....but I'll get to take one soon.
Neither of us can resist cheap, old books, especially beautifully illustrated ones. These beauties set us back about 50 cents each. Even though they had been much loved by generations of elementary school students, I still find that an amazing bargain for such fantastically illustrated works.
I created this flower for the Blooms of Nigeria tumblr created by Rebecca Bradley and Janna Morton. The tumblr is a tribute of illustrations commissioned for each of the 180 kidnapped
Nigerian girls whose names are currently available to the public. You can read more information about the kidnappings here. I feel honored just to be asked to participate and hope the tumblr can continue to bring awareness to the plight of these girls.deannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00462967603165693754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8371444819729553472.post-70917412437710508852014-04-10T22:12:00.000-04:002014-04-10T22:12:16.287-04:00Edwin Land & His Magic CameraMy beloved polaroid land camera finally died for good last month. No matter how many times I changed the batteries, film, or tinkered with the wires, I coudn't resusitate it like I had so many times before. It lasted me several happy years and only cost 99 cents from a thrift shop, so I can't really complain.
These are a few of the final 11 chosen interior illustrations, as well as the cover. The cover was drawn digitally in photoshop and the interior images were drawn in graphite. I'll post the others and maybe some of the rejected cover ideas later this week. This was really a dream project for me. The Folio Society is one of my all time favorite clients and the source material was dark and moody and perfect for coming up with (hopefully) intriguing images. I'm really happy with how it all came together in the end.deannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00462967603165693754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8371444819729553472.post-65032392043895780152014-03-11T21:07:00.001-04:002014-03-11T21:07:53.513-04:00Another Random Sketchbook page

I got to hear John Hendrix give a lunchtime lecture at MICA today! I've admired his work for so long, so it was great to actually listen to him talk about his work in person. He gave great advice about finding their personal voice in their work. My only regret is that I didn't get to talk to him after since I had to get back to my own class. If you're not familiar with his work, check it out - his hand lettering, portrait work and sketchbooks are amaaaazing.
So much has happened since I posted last that I don't even know how to jump back into this blog. In the 9 months (tomorrow exactly!) since Sebastian was born he's been a colic-y baby and a baby who's refused to sleep through the night. Luckily he's outgrown both of those stages and is now a babbling, crawling, delightful little guy. We moved to a new apartment over the summer. I returned to teaching full-time last September and somehow made it through the fall semester on barely any sleep. Sleep makes such a huge difference on productivity and quality of life! I've continued sketching and illustrating and will try to post those new images soon as well as a final post on the book project I was working on all last year.
Anyway, there's a lot of old stuff to update on as well as new sketches and inspirations to share. I'm glad to be back and can't wait to jump right in.
p.s. - The blog header might change a few times in the next few weeks. I'm starting fresh with a new domain name and slight redesign. Please stick with me as I work out all of the quirks! The old posts are still here, but with some slightly wacky image/type spacing. The new posts will be much cleaner and will feature larger images! I should have it all worked out in the next few days.deannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00462967603165693754noreply@blogger.com0
