Yesterday I got to hear illustrator and designer Edel Rodriguez give a lecture at The University of the Arts. I've liked Edel's illustrations for years, but hearing about his process and the inspiration behind work made me appreciate it even more. It was especially nice to see some of his gallery paintings and sculptures and hear about his experience as a former art director for Time Magazine.
The most interesting fact of the lecture - I'd always assumed most of his illustrations were created digitally because they looked so mechanical with clean lines, but it turns out he just uses lots of masked off areas with paint rollers and printing techniques! I am duly impressed.
